ADA Compliant Fire Extinguisher Cabinet.
Some building codes require an ADA compliant
fire extinguisher cabinet. Start by reviewing the
Americans with
Disabilities Act of 1990. Also check with your local build
code administration, building inspectors, and fire inspectors. We will include some
general information about an ADA compliant fire extinguisher cabinet but
the local code may vary.
There are two basic types of ADA compliant fire extinguisher
cabinets; a semi-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet and a fully recessed
fire extinguisher cabinet.

A semi-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet may
protrude from the wall no more than 4" for it to comply with ADA
guidelines. If the fire extinguisher cabinet protrudes 4", a flush
mount door handle must be used to make the fire extinguisher cabinet compliant. Using a
semi-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet will allow more room for the
fire extinguisher. If the installation calls for a 20 lbs. fire
extinguisher this stile cabinet will be more accommodating.

A fully-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet may
protrude from the wall no more than 4" for it to comply with ADA
guidelines. Using a fully-recessed fire extinguisher cabinet can
reduce the amount of space for the fire extinguisher. This stile cabinet
will leave minimal room for the fire extinguisher. If the
installation calls for a 20 lbs. fire extinguisher, verify that the fire
extinguisher will fit inside that fire extinguisher cabinet.
